Another character, Dr. Carolyn Lam, was added for Season 8. Lam had previously auditioned for a role in the feature film. The producers held auditions for the role after shooting for the film and casting had ended, as they wished to provide a more sensitive character as opposed to the one in the film. Lam was eventually chosen. Comstock had said that in the event of character development in the characters, the producers were not telling any lies.[25] Dr. Fraiser was a new character for the series and auditioned for a salary of US$1 million per episode.[26] Fraiser was considered more of an older character for the series and was written the role with that in mind.[27] Location scouting for the series was done in the United States, Canada and Scotland to provide a natural backdrop for the series. Although New Zealand would be used and the series completed there, the producers felt that Canada offered the most suitable location for the setting of the series.[28] The producers approached the owners of the Peterborough Mall in Toronto, Canada and had discussed a series premiere shootout in the location. This was later decided against, with the creators saying that there could not be any'shopping centre' in Canada.[29] Productions during filming required the producers to keep the company afloat financially. Filming was completed by January 1997, with the final episode airing in May. The producers tried to avoid allocating budgets for the series as, at the time, the series was not entirely intended to be a long-term endeavour.[30] Apart from the first episode, which had already aired in the United States, all 12 episodes were scheduled to be released in Canada by the company Cineflix, with the final episode untitled.[31] After the first episode aired, the popularity of the series was higher than expected and the decision to air the episodes in Canada was made. The decision to vary the formats of the series episodes (an episode having 3 distinct time periods) was made in order to keep the series alive.[32] The series premiere setting was chosen because of the large number of characters to be introduced and movies had not been able to portray all the characters from the feature film.[33] Regardless, a number of characters who would later appear in the series had post offices assigned to their characters in the feature film.[34] The producers were inspired by a line from the second film, with Sydney Pollack saying 'I thought it was kinda funny... d2c66b5586
