The producers from the 1987 series, Michael Jellins, Tom Patchett, and Tom Waltz, refused to bring the turtles back to the new series, but to grant Laird full control over the franchise and the means to decide who would be the voice actors as well as approving the new animated series. It was also mentioned that the new series might not be ninja-themed, but it'll be a moving-forward evolution of the turtles, while Laird would retain the creation of the characters.[18] Actor Phil Goldfine mentioned during an interview that he would be interested in voicing one of the turtles, though it would take time for him to get trained on the turtles.[21]
Nolan North stated that he had "no idea" about what was going to happen with the turtles in the new series, however he was "pretty happy there would be some kind of Turtles" for more generations to come and was honored to be a part of making the new series a success. The show has different characters, but will be a continuation of the 1987 series.[5]
The new series premiered on Nickelodeon on November 6, 2012 with a new opening sequence and theme song performed by Paramore. The new opening featured the Turtles traveling through the San Francisco Bay Area. The group is then shrunk to the size of ants, and is shown walking on the San Francisco Bridge featuring an "it's about turtles" slogan in place of the logo.[22]
In December 2012, Nickelodeon announced plans for an annual holiday special of one-hour episodes. A second trailer was released for the special on December 6, 2012, which invoked a return of the 1987 series's theme song, as well as featuring key characters from the 1987 series in an out-of-universe appearance.[23] d2c66b5586
