General Injuries: Someone can become injured or sick as a result of their exposure to the radiation released/created by high-energy sources. Whilst general exposure to radiation can cause immediate or delayed health problems, the acute problems are much more common, whereas the delayed and long term effect of exposure to radiation is much less common and is characterised by conditions such as Cancer. It is difficult to sustain an injury for more than a few days, but an injury can occur as a result of experiencing radiation within that time.
Nuclear Radiation: Radiation is an energy consisting of parts identified as electrons, protons, neutrons or photons. Electrons and protons are a type of ion, and do not usually cause ionising radiation injuries.
When they travel through the body, they may injure white blood cells, and damage DNA. They can also, on rare occasions, be harmful if they remain in the body for a long period of time. The damage they cause is referred to as DNA damage.
Neutrons (and other particles) are much more common in nuclear explosions, and the damage they cause is referred to as neutron radiation. They are also one of the main causes of radiation sickness.
Radiation sickness can occur when people are exposed to high levels of radiation. The type of radiation causes changes in normal body functions like the immune system, enzyme function, and cell reproduction, and can result in cancer. Beyond this type of radiation, from sources such as nuclear reactors, bomb testing, etc, it is possible to receive general radiation poisoning (called background radiation) from other causes of radiation exposure such as medical procedures. In some cases of high enough doses of radiation, this damage can be fatal.
The type of injury an individual receives depends on how much of the radiation they are exposed to, the level of exposure (e.g. normal level, higher, etc), other factors such as location, and the type of radiation involved (see table above). d2c66b5586
