In March 2008, Raimi and his brother Matt were approached to direct the horror film Catch and Release; however, the filmmaker turned down the project to direct an adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, which Chris Weitz eventually took on.
On June 4, 2010, it was announced that Raimi would direct James Gunn in Black Stripe, an update of the Robert E. Howard character created by Joe Sanford. However, the project never came to fruition; instead, in October of the same year, Raimi was signed on to direct The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, based on the novel by J. R. R. Tolkien. In a March 2011 interview in the British magazine Total Film, Raimi said that he had to push Tolkien's novel down the list of projects that he was interested in directing, and in a March 2012 Zeitgeist interview Raimi said he decided to direct The Hobbit because "It was supposed to be the fellowship of three, and this movie is about seven men. I really wanted to make this movie."[46]
Raimi's take on The Hobbit would include visual effects rather than CGI. The Sci-Fi Wire reported on September 20, 2012 that there is a plan in place for Disney to have the film's property rights revert to Raimi and Tapert in 2020, when they will fund a re-shoot and release the film as their own.[47] However, in November 2013, Peter Jackson replaced Raimi as the director of The Hobbit d2c66b5586
