Replication is bidirectional, occurring both inbound and outbound. Each of these directions can be disabled/enabled indepedently of the other using the repadmin command. The repadmin command is part of the support tools, included on the Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 CDs but not installed by default. (Installing them is highly recommended in all situations.)
When replication is disabled, warning events 1115 (for disabled outbound replication) or 1113 (for disabled inbound replication) from source NTDS General will be logged in the Directory Service event log during system startup. As far as I am aware, no events are regularly logged during normal operation to indicate that replication is disabled. When replication is re-enabled, informational events 1116 (for outbound replication) and 1114 (for inbound replication) are logged.
The Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC) is a Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 component that automatically generates and maintains the intra-site and inter-site replication topology. You can disable the KCC's automatic generation of intra-site or inter-site topology management, or both.
In some situations you may want to manually create replication connections to tailor the replication topology, but this increases the workload for monitoring for changes in the network topology described in Active Directory or replication failures occurring on domain controllers.
The KCC runs at regular intervals to adjust the replication topology for changes that occur in Active Directory, such as adding new domain controllers and new sites that are created. At the same time, the KCC reviews the replication status of existing connections to determine if any connections are not working. If a connection is not working, after a threshold is reached, KCC automatically builds temporary connections to other replication partners (if available) to insure that replication is not blocked.
NTDSSETTINGS_OPT_IS_AUTO_TOPOLOGY_DISABLED means that intra-site topology management is disabled, and NTDSSETTINGS_OPT_IS_INTER_SITE_AUTO_TOPOLOGY_DISABLED means that inter-site topology management is disabled.
if you are implementing the major changes to active directory like extending the schema version. it is recommended that you should disable the outbound replication on schema master domain controller. After disabling the replicating, do the changes and test the changes if you find that changes you have made are unacceptable, you can just rollback the changes from schema master domain controllers rather than being faced with the prospect of performing a disaster recovery operation on your entire domain.
It is very important and recommended to disabling outbound replication on a domain controller will not have any effect on inbound replication; the DC will still receive updates from its other replication partners unless you disable inbound replication on them as well.
Before starting wrangling AD replication with repadmin, you need to start it up first and get acquainted. To use repadmin, you must either be connected via RDP to a DC or have the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) package installed on a domain-joined computer. This tutorial will be performing all demos directly on a DC and will show the most used repadmin commands.
In a multi-DC AD environment, each DC replicates with another DC known as its partner or neighbor. When troubleshooting replication issues, knowing the replication topology is a critical piece of information to know about.
Depending on the replication schedule, a DC can sometimes get behind its neighbor. When it does, its queue begins to increase. The queue is the number of items pending to be replicated to it from its source neighbor.
To calculate replication topology, each DC runs a Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC). The KCC is responsible for ensuring a particular DC is aware of who its inbound neighbor is. By default, the KCC runs every 15 minutes, but you can invoke it manually if required.
By default, DC replication is a pull operation, but you can also configure replication to push. For example, perhaps you need DC01 to send updates to DC02 instead of DC02 pulling changes from DC01. To do so, add the /P argument to change the direction of replication.
In the above examples, you were replicating all changes, but repadmin can also get granular and replicate a single AD object. Using the /replsingleobj parameter, you can select a single object and control its full replication from source to destination DC.
When DCs replicate between sites, AD requires every site to contain a DC that receives and sends all incoming and outgoing replication requests known as a bridgehead server. Knowing which DCs are bridgehead servers and the status of each naming context is helpful when troubleshooting.
Repadmin is an older but still powerful tool to manage and monitor Active Directory replication. Repadmin has many parameters and options to manage and review replication across a wide range of situations.
With cross-cluster replication in Amazon OpenSearch Service, you can replicate indexes, mappings, and metadata from one OpenSearch Service domain to another. It follows an active-passive replication model where the follower index (where the data is replicated) pulls data from the leader index. Using cross-cluster replication helps to ensure disaster recovery if there is an outage, and allows you to replicate data across geographically distant data centers to reduce latency. You pay standard AWS data transfer charges for the data transferred between domains.
In order to start replication, you must include the es:ESCrossClusterGet permission on the remote (leader) domain. We recommend the following IAM policy on the remote domain (which also lets you perform other operations, such as indexing documents and performing standard searches):
In order for non-admin users to perform replication activities, they also need to be mapped to the appropriate permissions. Most permissions correspond to specific REST API operations. For example, the indices:admin/plugins/replication/index/_resume permission lets you resume replication of an index. The commands to start replication and create a replication rule are special cases. Because they invoke background processes on the leader and follower domains, you must pass a leader_cluster_role and follower_cluster_role in the request. OpenSearch Service uses these roles in all backend replication tasks. To replicate indexes from one domain to another, you need to set up a cross-cluster connection between the domains. The easiest way to connect domains is through the Connections tab of the domain dashboard. You can also use the configuration API or the AWS CLI. Because cross-cluster replication follows a \"pull\" model, you initate connections from the follower domain.
If you previously connected two domains to perform cross-cluster searches, you can't use that same connection for replication. The connection is marked as SEARCH_ONLY in the console. In order to perform replication between two previously connected domains, you must delete the connection and recreate it. When you've done this, the connection is available for both cross-cluster search and cross-cluster replication.
OpenSearch Service validates the connection request. If the domains are incompatible, the connection fails. If validation succeeds, it's sent to the destination domain for approval. When the destination domain approves the request, you can begin replication.
This example assumes that an admin is issuing the request and uses all_access for the leader_cluster_role and follower_cluster_role for simplicity. In production environments, however, we recommend that you create replication users on both the leader and follower indexes, and map them accordingly. The user names must be identical.
